Kantipur's publishers report that the circulation of this newspaper is just above 250,000 copies per day. It is the most widely read newspaper in Nepal, and also a good source of country news for Nepalis living around the globe.
The newspaper is the first broadsheet in the non-government sector in Nepal promoted by a 29 year old visionary called Shyam Goenka who led the way for institutionalizing of free press and journalism in a hitherto media domain dominated by tabloids. An English newspaper, "The Kathmandu Post" was also promoted by the same promoter, simultaneously. Kantipur is the only newspaper in the world which has registered national leadership in readership within months of launch. Newspapers promoted by the redoubtable and mighty houses of Ambanis and Thapars in the neighboring India at the same time, failed to register any comparable presence. It was evidenced that brand loyalty in newspapers seldom change and that is why TOI in Mumbai, HT in Delhi, The Hindu in Chennai, Deccan Chronicle in Hyderabad, Deccan Herald in Bangalore still reign the readership charts despite aggressive marketing campaigns run by the leaders in other demographic zones. Kantipur went on to become a strong pillar in the nursing of the nascent democracy in Nepal. The newspaper has sworn by the highest standards of ethics and independence in its columns till date taking into its strides several difficult moments when its freedom was sought to be attacked. Now it is in very serious condition because India is hold-up its newsprint for the long time. If India do not release soon Nepal's largest daily is going to be close.
